Empowering Christian Women to Honor God Through Fashion

We live in a time of confusion. Fashion is just ONE area of confusion and misunderstanding. Specially for Christian women, who want to honor God with their appearance don´t know, how to deal correctly with this topic.

Maybe you ask yourself, “is fashion even biblical?”

Maybe you think, if the appearance is simple, the person is humble! On the other hand, if the person is too fashionable, the person has ungodly values and is copying the world.

Whatever your doubts or questions are, let me share a few biblical guidelines with you, that can help you to make better decisions:

1.    God is not only interested in fashion; He is actually very involved in it since the very beginning. So we read about how God literally covered Lucifer with gems, gold and engravings. He was the most beautiful angel, the symbol of perfection until his heart became proud and he rebelled against God. (see details in Ezequiel 28:12-19)

Then again we see this same principle when addressing the priests. God not only designed their clothes, He placed precious stones on them as a reflection and symbol of His beauty and holiness.

He is also very involved in the case of Adam & Eve. When they had chosen to disobey God´s indications and rather listened to the suggestions of the snake (jealous Lucifer), the first thing they did, was to “hide!” behind fig leaves and in the shadows. Does that somehow sound familiar? Isn´t that our first reaction as well, when we feel not worthy? But God chose to call them into His presence and dignify them with a new dress of the best quality you can image: LEATHER. He knew that leaves wouldn´t serve the purpose. He dressed them up and prepared them for their new reality and status by giving them the best quality clothes you can imagine. That was so costly, that the blood of an innocent animal had to be shed. How amazing is this principle? And you think, God doesn´t care about the quality and beauty of your clothes.

Another outstanding example is Jesus himself. His tunic was of such quality and beauty, that 4 soldiers decided not to tear it into pieces but to roll the dice instead.

2.    Dress is message: Don´t underestimate the power of the “silent messages”. Appearance matters, because people don´t read your heart they read your appearance. "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1Samuel 16:7) But humans don´t have the ability. They read your heart through your appearance. Everything you are wearing is sending a silent message to the people you´re going. Therefore, address them with the way you dress like you desire to be addressed.

3.    First things first: Now you might think, what about 1 Peter 3.3: "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.” It doesn´t say, we are not supposed to wear these things, but focus on the heart first, on our identity. It is the WOMAN that carries the fashion and don´t let fashion define your IDENTITY. Be intentional with every detail, from shoelace to hairstyle and honor God by doing so.

4.    Be elegant! Elegance is your true godly nature:  Shine from within by becoming aware of who you really are. You are not called to lead a “Cinderella existence”, but rather to appear as the King’s daughter: radiantly beautiful, visible from far away!

5.    Shine outside with your color harmony: Did you know that the right colors draw attention to your face. Not only will you be perceived more consciously as a person, but you will also be taken seriously. The wrong colors for you draw attention to the less favorable parts of your body. They make you look older, more tired, and sometimes even really sick.

6.    Know your basics in timeless neutral colors and cuts. These are the foundation of your wardrobe. If these pieces are missing, you will always feel insecure and not know what to wear. But if you have a complete capsule, you can combine them almost unlimitedly, which is why these pieces are also called the “workhorses” in your wardrobe.

7.    Add color accents (highlights) near the face that serve as eye-catchers. These are the brighter colors from your color palette that have a stronger, signaling effect. Depending on the color harmony, this could be a strong shade of red, or perhaps pink. It can also be different shades of purple, from lavender to eggplant. It could also be a cheerful shade of yellow and, in rare cases, a bright orange.

8.    Make sure the type of pattern suits you in terms of size and shape. A flowery pattern on a more sporty woman simply looks totally meaningless. Conversely, a checkered or geometric pattern on a rather plump romantic woman makes her look totally boring and unfemenine. That's why it's so important to know your harmonious patterns.

9.    Know your fabrics and cuts. Here too, it is important to emphasize the harmony of your body and highlight the parts that you particularly like. You will learn to cover up the more unfavorable parts. The choice of fabric plays a big role.

10. Add surprising details that will totally enhance your otherwise simple outfit. This can be a colored top, a scarf, a piece of jewelry or a handbag, belt or shoes. It is important that an accent color remains just an accent. It was supposed to be a surprise. Something you didn't expect.

Be original and the awesome YOU were meant to be. Copying is easy. A healthy, fit, stylish and unique appearance, on the other hand, is work!
